Walk in my shoes

We’re taking you on a walk through the day in the life of each of us today, in my case, a paralegal/author.

So, I’ve worked in a law office for the past 12 years. So, the law; it’s interesting on most days. The office I work in requires varied practices. On any given day I can work on an employment agreement, real estate transfers, Wills and powers of attorney and so many more things. Each day is different and full. I work part-time now, which has offered me additional time to write.

My alarm goes off at 4:30 a.m. I’m not one of those folks who pops out of bed and begins her day. I have to lay there for a while, organize my day in my head and generally wake up. The instant I roll out of bed, I make a bee-line for the coffee pot and let that brew while I use the facilities.

Grabbing my coffee, I head to my home office and begin my day. I start by checking my facebook groups to see what I need to take care of. I manage many groups and have several activities going at any one time. Chandler County is a creation of mine with my fellow author Stephany Tullis.  That’s the first group I check. Then on to the others, chat with friends and readers and wake up further while scrolling my newsfeed. I create a few tweets and then read over the words I wrote last night in my current WIP. Usually the next day I’ll find typos or sentences that don’t make sense.

By 6:30 am, I need to get in the shower and get ready for work – my other work.  Entering the office by 8:00 am, I look over my desk, figure out what top priority is and get cracking at it. There could be any number of other things that come up during the day. We have several new employees and many of them were not well versed in our software and need help as they navigate those waters. It’s all good though, they are fast learners and enjoyable to work with.

My day at the office ends at 3:00 pm. I don’t take a formal lunch, I eat at my desk so I can leave early. I arrive home by 3:30 and that’s when my writing day begins.  I again check in with my groups, check email and work through things I need to straighten out.

I pull up my latest WIP and begin writing. I’ll write, research where needed and reread what I’ve read until around 9:00 – 10:00 depending on my stamina.  That’s honestly an average day in my life. Some of my writing will be blog posts, some will be planning and answering interview questions for blogs I’m appearing on. Sometimes I have a Facebook take over and have things to prepare for that.

On the weekends, especially if its nice out, we’ll hop on the bikes and go for a ride. We also have a nice group of friends that we have Thursday night dinner rides with, that breaks up my week and puts me in touch with friends, nature and what’s going on in the world, since I’m usually working most of the time.

What’s a day in your life like?

  1. Wow – busy day! I thought I got up early enough, but 04:30 goes above and beyond the call of duty!

    • Thanks and while I agree that it goes above and beyond, I simply don’t have enough time in a day to get it all done as it is. It’s necessary at this point.

  2. I think to get up that early in the morning, I would need to get to bed way earlier than I do. I am at my most productive in the evenings … and always have been. It’s those circadian rhythms and all that. If it weren’t for the dog, I’d never get up before 6:30 am … except in Hawaii, to watch the sunrise.

  3. I don’t know if I could adjust to a 4:30 wake up time. I function better sleeping in a bit later and staying up later at night.

  4. Wow! Sounds like you have too much going on. I don’t know how you keep it all organized so that you don’t forget half of it. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Thanks for sharing your day. I can relate to most of your day. Not the 4:30 am! I am a full time paralegal and I ride my own motorcycle. Not an author, but I spend my creative time crafting [beads, card making, baking, some sewing, resin and alcohol ink projects are my latest interests] and of course reading.
