Has there been a time when you wanted to give up writing?

Today’s topic – Talk about a time when you almost gave up writing.

At first, this topic gave me pause, because honestly I’ve never wanted to give up writing.  But, in a moment of reflection, I have to admit there have been times when I’ve wondered if I have what it takes to navigate this crazy world.  Today’s writer is so much different than in years gone by.  In so many ways its great, because anyone who has stories bursting to get out of their heads, can be a writer.  But, that is a double edged sword.  There are also many writers who have published and shouldn’t.  But the part for me that made me question my staying power is the plethora of would be cover designers, editors, promoters, virtual assistants, and so-called experts.

I’ve had to wade through flaky cover designers, over-priced editors that do a questionable job, and tons and tons of people who claim to be great publicists and who actually do nothing or next to nothing.

On top of that, and I’ve discussed this before, the never ending marketing is for the birds.  When I am marketing, I am not writing. If I’m not writing, I am not putting out new stories and the characters in my head get restless. When I am not putting out stories I fall to the bottom of a very large pile of authors who are writing and promoting themselves like crazy.  Then, I won’t sell books because no one can find me under the big pile.  Facebook suppresses posts so only a very small handful of your followers are seeing your posts. And, if those few don’t like your posts within three days, they fall off the handful of people who Facebook will show your posts to. The pressure is immense.

So, I’ve never thought about quitting writing. But, I have wondered if I will be able to keep up the pace on a daily basis. Lucky for me when I am feeling depleted and wrung out, I hop on a motorcycle and hit the wind.  For some reason, that always seems to refresh me in ways I will explain in another post.

Thank you for reading and I hope you will see what my fellow authors have to say about this writing world. They may have a totally different take on all things writing.  The kindest thing you can do is share this post with your friends.  Thank you.
