Florida Life

We’ve been wintering in Florida for the past three winters. We found out just how much we love it on vacation four years ago, and an opportunity arose for a small place in central Florida, so we took it to test the waters so to speak. It didn’t take long for us to fall in love with warm weather and activities to keep us busy. In April we bought a house here. The house is very nice, but I didn’t care for the color on the walls. And I also love to paint, so there’s that. I’ll post updates to the house as we do them here.

First up – The Office

The majority of the house was painted with this light green. It’s not a bad color, but it doesn’t pop. I decided to go with a dark brown. I usually paint in earth tones because most anything goes with them and if I decide to change pictures, or furniture, it’ll go with the walls. In the office, the before picture is after we moved in and hung curtains. You can see our colors didn’t blend well with the walls. So, dark brown it is. I just love the color. It’s deep and moody and this room gets a lot of light so the deep color isn’t a problem.

The bookcases I found on the market place for $400.
The sofa (which is a pull out for when we have guests) was also found on the marketplace for $150.
The paint is Sherwin Williams – Grounded – $85 Gallon
Total – $635

Kitchen/Living Area

Using the same brown paint, we painted the living room/kitchen area. These pictures aren’t exactly the same angle, but you can still see the difference. Same furniture (except the corner cabinet), different wall color.

Guest Bedroom

I decided to show the photos this way so the before and after were easier to see. The last picture includes the same lamps, but I painted them to match the room.

Laundry Room

The laundry room was a boring and less-than functional room. The only shelf was a wire shelf. The sink was an industrial laundry tub and there was nowhere to hide things. We took the wire shelf down and bought two black shelves from Home Depot. I found a cabinet on the marketplace, which conveniently had a “laundry sink and granite top” on it. It was in a storage shed and dirty. The cabinet was white.

I painted the cabinet to match the shelves and did a fair amount of scrubbing on the sink and counter top, which turned out super nice. It’s the first room we walk into from the garage and our main entry area to the house, so we wanted it to look nice. We have one more thing to add in there, and that’s a light fixture. Right now it’s a basic florescent light, but we found a fixture on the Marketplace for $20. We love the way it looks.
