Jessie Walsh, from Midnight Magic, was like no other character I have written. While many historical female characters are damsels in distress, Jessie takes charge of her life. But you don’t have to take my word for it. Here is a little from Jessie:
Jessie, you are so much stronger, than so many women of your time. Why do you think that is?
Well, for starters, that is who I have always been. But also, I am a mother. Caring for our children, pushes us to be our best selves. Even if we don’t have the strength to make hard choices for ourselves, we can make them for our children.
Tell us about the hard choices you have had to make?
I married the first time for the wrong reasons. It was a terrible mistake but I was willing to live with the consequences. When it became unsafe for my daughter that is when I decided to leave.
Where did you go when you left?
First to St. Louis. As the Gateway to the West, so many people are going in and out of that city, it’s easy to hide. Then I travelled to Texas. At first, I just wanted to be off the beaten path. But Texas is a place I can truly call home. There is so much simple beauty and space to just be yourself on a ranch.
And how do you like ranch life?
I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you it was tough but it is an honest day, and I wouldn’t trade it for all the fancy dresses in the world. My whole life, people have liked me for the way I look. But on the ranch, they like me for who I am and what I can do. No one has ever really known me the way my boss Jake does.
Now tell us about Jake Tate?
Sigh… He is like no other man I have ever met. It isn’t just his good looks or his broad shoulders. He is as honest as the life he leads and kinder than any man I have ever met. I am changed, for the better, because of him.
And what does the future hold for the two of you?
Well, now. You’ll just have to read my story to find out.
“I absolutely loved this book. I couldn’t put it down. I fell in love with all the characters. But Jessie is my kind of lady. She doesn’t know the word quit.” –Barbi Davis
